Garibaldi Geology! (part 3 of 4) – How geology controls geography

Updated on:

The Garibaldi region is underlain by a mosaic of different rock types, varying greatly in colour, texture and resistance to erosion. Each rock type has weathered under the influence of erosion to form very differing landscapes: 1) ancient sedimentary rocks underlie the gentle contours of many tundra ridges that make Garibaldi country so easy to hike; 2) resistant granite forms high rugged peaks and ridge lines accessed only by climbers; and 3) dark coloured and geologically younger volcanic rocks form the most famous landmarks of Garibaldi – The Tusk, Mt Garibaldi, Mt Price, the Table, and the Cinder Cone.
