For two days I float in my kayak amid the commercial herring roe fishery along the shores of Denman Island. I am both energized by the wild energy of the herring spawn, and saddened by the industrial destruction of this keystone marine species that so many fish, whales, seals and sea lions depend on for their survival.

Given the declining herring stocks, and great loss of smaller herring stocks around the Salish Sea, many are calling on a moratorium so as to rebuild herring.
